2006 Chevrolet Cobalt Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear brake disc on 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: Raise and support the vehicle, take off the tire and wheel assembly in order to replace the rear Brake Disc. Compress the Brake Caliper Piston using a large c-clamp (J 41013), making sure to not move more than 1 mm (0.039 inch) of travel on the piston in case you damage the internal adjusting mechanism. After compression of the piston, take off the c-clamp and hold the brake caliper using heavy mechanic's wire to avoid the strain on the hydraulic flexible brake hose. Then take off the brake caliper and the caliper mounting bracket as an assembly from the Steering Knuckle, while not exerting any pressure on the brake hose. Mark the Brake Disc's relative position to the wheel studs before you remove the latter. Remove any rust or contamination on the hub/axle flange using the Wheel Hub resurfacing kit (J 42450-A) and from the Brake Disc using the rotor resurfacing kit (J 41013). Check the mating surfaces for dirt and install the new Brake Disc by lining it to the matchmark. If needed, put the assembled lateral runout (LRO) of the Brake Disc to measurement and adjust if tolerance is not met. Lower the vehicle and reinstall the brake caliper and bracket assembly, and then install the tire and wheel assembly. Lastly, if you refinished or replaced the Brake Disc, burnish the pads and discs.
