2006 Chevrolet Cobalt Brake Line Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Replace the Brake Line Using the J 45405 Brake Pipe Flaring Kit on 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: Replace the brake pipe using the J 45405 Brake Pipe Flaring Kit and select double-walled steel brake pipe to prevent brake system failure. First examine the damaged brake pipe section then free it from retainers. When sectioning the brake pipe use an appropriate position that stays away from bends or mounting points. Measuring tools help determine the pipe length including the addition of flaring depths: 6.35 mm (0.250 inch) for 4.76 mm (3/16 inch) diameter pipe and 9.50 mm (0.374 inch) for 6.35 mm (1/4 inch) diameter pipe. Cut the brake pipe straight through by using the tool provided in J 45405. Pick the right brake pipe size and tube nuts to fit and remove nylon covering from the pipe tip using the J 45405's related tool before flaring. Use the de-burring device inside the kit to smooth both pipe interior and exterior walls. Install the tube nuts then cleanse the brake pipe and J 45405 before flaring the pipe with loosened die clamping screw and placed die parts. Push the ready brake pipe into the cage die structure and activate the clamping screw before making the tube flare with the forming tool. Examine both the shape and diameter of the flare right after creation to verify that it matches industry standards for 3/16 inch (4.76 mm) or 1/4 inch (6.35 mm) diameter pipe. Acceptable dimensions are 6.92 mm (0.272 inch) within a range of 0.18 mm (0.007 inch). Use the right unions to fit the new pipe sections before you attach them to retainers. Also test the hydraulic brake system using the brake pedal while ensuring no leaks appear during the engine test.
