2007 Chevrolet Cobalt Brake Line Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the brake line using the J 45405 Brake Line Flaring Kit on 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: Use the J 45405 Brake Pipe Flaring Kit plus double-walled steel brake pipe J 45405 to fix the pipe without brake system failures. Check the brake pipe repair area before detaching it from its restraints according to need. Before you start use the 6.35 mm (0.250 in) flare measurement on 4.76 mm (3/16 in) pipe and 9.50 mm (0.374 in) measurement on 6.35 mm (1/4 in) pipe. Cut the brake pipe directly with the provided pipe cutter tool in J 45405. Install the correct tube nuts and select brake pipe dimensions. Remove nylon coating with the coating stripping tool from J 45405 kit. Then use die de-burring tool to prepare inside and outside facing pipe edges. Begin the project by mounting tube nuts then clean the brake pipe and J 45405 assembly before starting the flare process by adjusting the die clamping screw and positioning the die halves. Insert the primed pipe end into the die assembly then fasten the clamping screw while using the forming mandrel to construct the flare. Check the flared end to ensure it meets specifications: 6.92 and 8.92 mm in a 0.18 mm range for 4.76 and 6.35 mm brake pipe sizes respectively. Use the appropriate brake pipe bending tool to create new pipe shapes when needed. Attach this pipe to its necessary unions, connect it to the retainers using proper installation tools, and then perform hydraulic brake system bleeding. Verify for leaks from brake pipe flares when you run the engine and engage the brakes.
