2006 Chevrolet Cobalt Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the rear brake calipers on 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: Start the brake caliper overhaul by pulling the component off the vehicle while taking necessary brake dust and fluid safety measures. The brake caliper assembly must be replaced because its crucial shaft seal cannot be serviced when brake fluid leakage occurs at the rear and moves past the integral park brake actuator. To access the Brake Caliper Piston dust boot seal take a small wooden or plastic tool to remove the retaining ring from its place in the caliper seal counterbore. Position a wooden stopper on the inside caliper body directly opposite the piston space and push low-pressure compressed air into the inlet hose to shift the caliper piston out. Take out both the piston dust boot and its seal from the caliper opening and dispose of them. Check for brake caliper assembly binding when you turn the park brake lever while looking at the actuator parts; replace the brake caliper unit if the system shows signs of resistance. Keep the Brake Caliper Piston smooth during cleaning. Replace the brake caliper because its bore has too much damage including cracks, wear, pitting, heavy rust or corrosion. In case of mild rust or corrosion wipe them off with delicate emery paper but consider buying a new assembly if those methods fail. Apply filtered non-lubed air to remove denatured alcohol from the Brake Caliper Piston bore, seal counterbore, caliper piston, and caliper sleeves. Test the caliper piston for any structural problems and switch the component if needed while examining the mounting holes for matching flaws that require a complete replacement. Use brake fluid saturn p/n 21013073 or its equivalent dot-3 brake fluid to lubricate the new piston seal prior to inserting it into the caliper bore. Insert the caliper piston with the new dust boot seal on until the tool reaches all the way to bottom. Insert the piston dust boot seal accurately into the counterbore space before putting on the retaining ring. After installing the caliper to the vehicle perform a hydraulic brake system bleed check; should you spot leaks before the dust boot seal replace the entire caliper piston since you cannot fix the built-in adjustment mechanism seal.
