2007 Chevrolet Cobalt Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the rear brake calipers on 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: In order to overhaul the rear brake caliper- first it's important to make the rear brake caliper from the vehicle while taking care of any leaks this time around from the rear of the caliper past the integral park brake actuator shaft seal and since the park brake mechanism includes a non-serviceable seal, it means replacement for the brake caliper assembly. Drain brake fluid from caliper assembly and then cautiously unscrew the brake caliper dust boot seal retaining ring with a small wooden or plastic tool. Put a piece of wood against the inside of the caliper body at the side of the caliper piston that is away from it, and force through the caliper inlet hose low-pressure compressed air to remove the caliper piston. Remove the piston dust boot seal and remove piston seal from caliper bore, dispose of the piston seal. Rotate the mechanism of the integral park brake and make sure to check the actuator assembly; if it is faulty, then replace the brake caliper assembly. Do not use abrasives on the Brake Caliper Piston and examine it for presence of cracks, scoring, pitting or rust or excessive corrosion in the caliper bore and replace the whole caliper assembly if problems are identified. To deal with light rust or corrosion, try cleaning imperfections using fine emery paper or replacing the caliper assembly if it is impossible. Clean the Brake Caliper Piston bore, seal counterbore, caliper piston, and caliper sleeves with denatured alcohol and dry them using non-lubricated, filtered air. Examine the caliper piston for damage and a possible change, and examine the caliper mounting holes for the same problems, changing the caliper if necessary. In terms of installation, apply the gm approved or corresponding dot-3 brake fluid in lubricating the new piston seal and insert it in the caliper bore and then slide on the new dust boot seal to the caliper piston. Install the caliper piston into the bore, by using a spanner type wrench to turn the piston clockwise until it is fully seated in the/caliper body, fully seat the piston dust boot seal in the counterbore, and then install the retaining ring. Finally, fit the brake caliper on the vehicle and check for brake fluid leakages during the hydraulic breaking system bleed procedure; if bleeding through the front of the caliper is leaking past the piston dust boot seal, replace the caliper piston assembly because the seal in the piston is non-serviceable contained in the piston change mechanism.
