2005 Chevrolet Equinox Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear parking brake cable on 2005 Chevrolet Equinox?
A: The process of replacing rear park brake cables starts by making sir system disabled followed by front floor console removal. You must loosen the front cable adjusting nut until all tension leaves the park brake cable system. The rear carpet retainers need removal to forward position the carpet which reveals the park brake cables and body pass-through grommets. The appropriate rear cable from the cable equalizer needs to be separated by releasing the park brake lever. Once detached the rear cable fitting must be removed from its bracket on the lever. The park brake cable routing tabs inside the vehicle floor need to be flipped backward while the rear body grommet of the cable needs to be released from its pass-through opening. Lift and stabilize the vehicle before you uninstall the underbody retainer bolt of the park brake cable and the wire retainer bolt from the Trailing Arm suspension. First detach the cable from its opening in the underbody before operating on the wheel and tire then removing the Brake Drum. A flat-bladed screwdriver should be used for minor depression on retaining tabs found on the park brake cable fitting which will allow the cable to separate from the backing plate. Spread the cable return spring through the backing plate opening before steering the cable backwards while clearing the cable end from the park brake lever slot and finally elevating the cable to fully clear the lever. During the installation process start by inserting the park brake cable through the backing plate opening while placing the cable return spring directly behind the spring positioning tab. Push the cable along the outer side of the secondary Brake Shoe until the cable end extends slightly beyond the park brake lever slot before using a downward force to put the cable inside the slot to pull forward for securement. The procedure requires inserting a flat-bladed screwdriver to keep the cable in its place through the lever opening while pulling the cable return spring through the backing plate opening before fixing the cable fitting to the backing plate with appropriate retention tab installation. First adjust the rear drum brakes followed by Brake Drum installation and then place the rear tire and wheel assembly. Pass the cable through the vehicle underbody opening and fix the park brake cable retaining bracket on the rear suspension lower Trailing Arm by tightening both bolt and nut to 12 nm (106 inch lbs.). Place the vehicle underbody opening pass-through grommet in position before securing the park brake cable installation between the underbody retainer through a bolt tightened at 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Lower the car before connecting the cable fitting to the park brake lever bracket and joining the cable end to the cable equalizer. Route and lock the park brake cable by folding its tabs across the interior flooring tabs before replacing the carpet and installing the rear carpet retainers. The vehicle requires modification of the park brake cable tension after which the front floor console installation becomes necessary together with sir system activation.
