2005 Chevrolet Equinox Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Rack and Pinion steering gear on 2005 Chevrolet Equinox?
A: To service and repair the Rack And Pinion, first, lift and support the vehicle and take off the front tires. Next, remove both outer tie rod to steering knuckle nuts and throw them away. Do not use pickle fork or wedge style tools to pry out the ball stud as this might damage the seal/bushing; rather, stop the ball stud from turning by using the tie rod separator (SA91100C) to split the tie rods apart, leaving them resting on the steering knuckles. Rotate the intermediate Steering Shaft to get to the intermediate pinch bolt on the intermediate to Rack And Pinion pinch bolt, then remove and discard it. Remove the intermediate shaft from the Rack And Pinion and the stabilizer links from the stabilizer bar. For cvt equipped vehicles, detach the shift cable clip from the Rack And Pinion. Go ahead and remove the Rack And Pinion to cradle mounting bolts and draw out the Rack And Pinion from the right side of the vehicle. If attaching the Rack And Pinion is included in a heat shield, then remove and store it for installation later on. For installation according to its application, install the heat shield in its applicable places and ensure the stabilizers are swung in the upmost before installing the Rack And Pinion from the right side. Center all the Rack And Pinion mounting bushings into the cradle supports, then hand start both Rack And Pinion to cradle mounting bolts and tighten to 110 nm (81 ft. Lbs.). For vehicles with cvt, install the shift cable clip to the Rack And Pinion, then attach the intermediate shaft to the Rack And Pinion, followed by installing a new pinch bolt torquing to 34 nm (25 ft. Lbs.). Reconnect the stabilizer links to the stabilizer bar, and holding the ball stud to avoid turning it, use the tie rod installer (J 44015) to bring the ball stud taper in 40 nm (30 ft.l lbs.). When replacing the j 44015, fit new nuts and do up the steering linkage outer tie rod-to-steering knuckle nut to 25 nm (18 lb ft)+90 degree. Last, install the front tires and wheels, check the alignment of the front wheel and align if need be before lowering the vehicle.
