  • Q: How to service and repair the steering knuckle on 2005 Chevrolet Equinox?
    A: To service and repair the Steering Knuckle one should start by lifting and supporting the vehicle to follow in lifting the tire and wheel. Ensure that the stabilizer link ball stud does not rotate during the time of disconnection to the strut assembly. Loosen the Steering Knuckle to strut bolts and nuts and then pull the wheel bearing/hub assembly off. Remove the lower Ball Joint cotter pin and then loosen the ball stud nut until it is at the same level with the upper ball stud. Step back with the j 43828 (Ball Joint Remover) to set the lower Control Arm from the Steering Knuckle while removing the lower Control Arm and nut. Next is the removal of the outer tie rod-end to knuckle nut, then sa91100c (Tie Rod Separator) to release the outer tie rod from the Steering Knuckle. Pull out the Steering Knuckle to strut bolts and nuts before removing it from the vehicle. To install, align the Steering Knuckle to strut assembly and then loosely anchor the strut to Steering Knuckle bolts and nuts. Mount the Control Arm ball stud into the Steering Knuckle, keeping in mind that the right ball stud type should be identified for torque values. Only utilize the hardware that comes with the new Ball Joint. Attaching the Control Arm Ball Joint bolts to the Ball Joint control arms with the bolt head on top. Torque the lower Control Arm ball studnut to its type i.e 60n.m (44 lb-ft) silver cup or 40n.m (30 lb-ft) flat and black bottom. Tighten the strut to Steering Knuckle bolts and nuts to 180 nm (133 ft. Lbs); be sure not to loosen the castle nut for cotter pin installation. Drive the cotter pin in without touching the blind on the Wheel Speed Sensor or on the drive axle, then mount the wheel bearing/hub assembly. Attach to outer Tie Rod End to the Steering Knuckle, with the use of the j 44015 (Steering Linkage Installer as the tool and seat the ball stud taper using an axle nut of 40 Nm (30 ft lbs.)). After removing it (J 44015), stick in a new tie rod retention nut and repair the steering linkage outer tie rod to-the-Steering Knuckle nut to 25 nm (18 lb-ft) plus 90 degrees. Lastly, reconnect the stabilizer link to the strut assembly, tighten nut with 65 nm (48 ft. Lbs.), reinstall the tire and wheel, lower the vehicle, and perform the wheel alignment.
