  • Q: How to replace the engine front timing cover on 2005 Chevrolet Malibu?
    A: To replace the engine front cover you should first disconnect the negative Battery Cable and drain the cooling system. Suppress the tensioner drive belt, drain out the engine oil, and remove the Oil Pan. Next, off the crankshaft balancer, the thermostat bypass pipe, radiator outlet hose, and the Water Pump from the engine front cover. Loosen the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor wiring harness bracket bolt and bracket, as well as the engine front cover bolts and the cover with its gasket. Clean, inspect the engine front cover; if a replacement is necessary take off the drive belt shield bolt and shield, and also the Water Pump and the 24x ckp sensor. For installation, if the 24x ckp sensor was disconnected, reinstall it with Water Pump. Mount the shield of the drive belt to the car's engine bay, fastening it to a bolt tightened to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). Now apply sealant to both ends of the engine front cover gasket by the gm p/n 12346004 (Canadian 10953480) or equivalent, then install the gasket and the engine front cover. Tighten the engine front cover bolts, small bolts are tight to 27 nm (20 ft. Lb.), large bolts are tight to 55 nm (41 ft. Lb.). Reattach ckp sensor wire harness bracket with its bolt and bolt it down at a torque of 27 nm (20 ft. Lbs). Attach the radiator outlet hose, the thermostat bypass pipe, the crankshaft balancer and the Oil Pan. Replace the drive belt tensioner, top off the crankcase with a new engine oil, and the cooling system before reconnecting the negative Battery Cable. Lastly, run the ckp system variation learn procedure.
