2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the A/C Expansion Valve in a system on 2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?
A: Recovery of the refrigerant from the a/c system should be the first step before replacing a thermal expansion valve (TXV). You need to disconnect the Evaporator tube from the txv nut by removing it to access the Evaporator outlet and inlet tube from the txv. Then dispose of the sealing washers. The refrigeration system avoids contamination by immediately placing caps on both Evaporator inlet and outlet tubes. Start by taking out the txv from the Evaporator core after removing the txv to Evaporator bolts and discarding the sealing washers two times. To install the txv insert new sealing washers onto the Evaporator core followed by mounting the txv in position using txv to Evaporator bolts which must be tightened to 7 n.m (62 lb in). Apply new sealing washers to the Evaporator inlet and outlet tubes before attaching them to the txv while removing the tape or cap. The last step involves inserting the Evaporator tube nut and tightening it to 27 n.m (20 lb ft), then performing system evacuation and recharging as well as leak testing through the halogen leak detector (J 39400-A).
