2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the harmonic balancer on 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer?
A: The process to replace a crankshaft balancer requires four essential tools including torque angle meter (J 36660-A), crankshaft front oil seal installer (J 41478) and crankshaft end protector (J 41816-2) and crankshaft balancer remover/holder (J 44226). The first step begins with cooling fan and shroud removal along with Drive Belt removal. First remove the balancer bolt with care before placing the crankshaft end protector (J 41816-2) into the crankshaft end. A 3 jaw puller should be used to remove the crankshaft balancer but the user must avoid pulling at the outer edge. Once you detach the puller along with the protector you must remove the crankshaft balancer shim from the crankshaft snout and then perform cleaning and inspection of the balancer. Start by lifting the vehicle then taking out the torque converter access plug from the Oil Pan before installation of the new balancer. Employ the torque converter holding tool from crankshaft balancer remover/holder (J 44226) kit to cautiously maintain the torque converter during balancer tightening. Insert gm p/n 12573950 crankshaft balancer shim onto the crankshaft snout before seating the balancer through use of the crankshaft front oil seal installer (J 41478). The installation process requires maintaining hold of the Flywheel to place the washer and bolt before the balancer bolt receives a torque of 150 nm (110 ft. Lbs.) and an additional twist using the torque angle meter (J 36660-A) for 180 degrees. Finish the procedure by removing the torque converter holding tool before putting back the access plug and lowering the vehicle for final installation of the Drive Belt and the cooling fan and shroud.
