2005 GMC Safari Air Bag Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the front air bag sensor on 2005 GMC Safari?
A: In order to replace the inflatable restraint front end discriminating sensor, you would have to disable the SIR system. Lift the vehicle and disconnect the harness connector at the top frame. Take out the bolt and remove the sensor from the cradle. Clean the mounting location; next, install the new sensor horizontally on top of the frame while the arrow in the sensor is aimed towards the front part of the vehicle. Fasten the sensor with the mounting fasteners, tightening them to 6.5 N.m (58 lb in). If the first fastener (rivet) was not correctly installed, remove and trash the fastener, then, reinstall the fastener (introducing a new rivet). If the sensor mounting holes or fasteners have been damaged, remove the improperly inserted rivet, enlarge the mounting holes in the lower radiator support to 9.0mm (0.35 in), insert and properly seat the rivnut, and install the screw to the sensor, and tighten fasteners to 6.5 N.m (58 lb in). Lastly, hook up the harness connector to the sensor, bring the vehicle down, and enable the SIR system.
