2006 Buick Rainier Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace the Automatic Transmission Filter and Fluid on 2006 Buick Rainier?
A: Vehicle elevation and placement of a drain pan under the transmission Oil Pan should be the first steps before automatic transmission fluid and filter replacement. The Drain Plug should be removed from the Oil Pan if present while clearance for pan removal is achieved by positioning the range selector cable bracket to the side without breaking connections to the lever or bracket. You should only remove the bolts from the front and side sections of the Oil Pan before making each rear bolt loose by about 4 turns. The rubber mallet can be used to tap the Oil Pan to let fluid drain before removing the remaining bolts and the Oil Pan with its gasket. Twist the filter while pulling it down from its position before you remove the filter seal using pliers if necessary because the seal may be trapped in the pump system. Discard both filter components afterward. Once removed inspect the fluid color together with the filter's content for clutch material and look for bronze slivers which represent bushing wear and check for steel particles. Use solvent to clean up both transmission case and Oil Pan surfaces before letting them dry completely without any remaining old gasket remnants. Automatic transmission fluid should cover the new filter seal before installing it inside the transmission housing using a socket with the appropriate measuring length for tapping into position. After installing the new filter you should put on the Oil Pan with its new gasket and tighten the bolts that connect the Oil Pan to the transmission case evenly at 11 nm (97 inch lbs.). Install the range selector cable bracket back if it was removed and fasten its bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). A small application of gm p/n 12346004 sealant needs to go on the Oil Pan Drain Plug threads when present before installing and tightening to 18 nm (13 ft. Lbs.). The vehicle should be lowered and you should use dexron(r) iii transmission fluid to fill the transmission to its proper level while checking the cold fluid level for first-time filling. Then inspect for any Oil Pan Gasket leakage.
