2006 Chevrolet Cobalt Exhaust Manifold Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the exhaust manifold (RPO LE5) on 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: Start the Exhaust Manifold (RPO LE5) replacement by taking out the intake manifold cover and removing Exhaust Manifold heat shield studs and finally extracting the heat shield itself. Vehicles with regular production option (RPO) mn5 require users to detach the heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) connector position assurance (CPA) retainer before disconnecting the engine harness electrical connector from ho2s. Once this is done users should remove the ho2s clip from the Thermostat Housing. Users with m86 rpo must first detach the cpa retainer of ho2s and then disconnect the ho2s electrical connector from its housing and remove the ho2s housing clip to extract the ho2s. Place the vehicle in position for lifting but maintain the exhaust flex decoupler intact by keeping its angles less than 3 degrees from each direction. Separate the Catalytic Converter from the Exhaust Manifold by first removing the Catalytic Converter to Exhaust Manifold nuts and then pulling down and back on the exhaust pipe. The technician discards both the Catalytic Converter Gasket and lowers the vehicle. The installation process requires elimination of Exhaust Manifold nuts and further removal of the Exhaust Manifold while also disposing of the gasket and cleaning all gasket surfaces. The installation process requires using a new Exhaust Manifold Gasket which should go onto the studs followed by the Exhaust Manifold. Use new Exhaust Manifold nuts to assemble the installation then torque them according to the specified sequence to 14 nm (10 ft. Lbs.). After supporting the car again, add the new Catalytic Converter Gasket between the Exhaust Manifold and Catalytic Converter. Tighten the Exhaust Manifold studs with 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) torque before letting the vehicle down. Reusing the current ho2s requires application of anti-seize compound saturn p/n 21485279 or equivalent product before tightening the sensor to 42 nm (31 ft. Lbs.). To install an ho2s for rpo m86 connect the engine harness electrical connector to the sensor then clip the ho2s to the Thermostat Housing and fasten the ho2s cpa retainer as well. When using rpo mn5 the process requires connecting the engine harness electrical connector to the ho2s before installing the ho2s clip from the Thermostat Housing and securing the ho2s cpa retainer. In the last operation install the Exhaust Manifold heat shield along with its studs which need a torque of 22 nm (16 ft. Lbs.) before reinstalling the intake manifold cover.
