2006 Chevrolet Colorado Ignition Lock Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Ignition Lock Cylinder on 2006 Chevrolet Colorado?
A: First identify the ignition switch lock cylinder key and lock codes to prepare for repairing this component that uses one key for all vehicle locks while the code remains stamped on the key head knockout surface. After finding the correct code cut a blank key with corresponding tumbler positions then test this key within the lock cylinder. Service parts warehouse provides new lock cylinders which require assembly with recommended locking components and tumblers. Use the ignition lock holding fixture (J 41340) to assemble and code ignition lock cylinders. Start by evaluating the lock tumbler arrangement through key alignment and write down the lowest exposed tumbler identifier in sequence for locations 1 through 10. Take the tumblers and place them in their preprogrammed slots before pulling the side bar for tumbler alignment then installing one tumbler spring above each tumbler. Use superlube gm p/n 12346241 or equivalent to lubricate the tumblers before adding the spring retainer and pressing it until it reaches a fully seated position. Check the final installment by first maintaining the spring retainer in position and inserting the key followed by verifying the side bar aligns with the cylinder face. Next position the ignition lock holding fixture (J 41340) with the spring retainer facing up and place it under the punch slots before tightening the holding screw. Stake the bezel end of the retainer using the punch device from (J 41340) before repeating for the opposite end following a 180-degree punch rotation. Inspect the retainer for correct and necessary restaking after you loosen the holding screw to remove the cylinder. Place the retainer spring and retainer into the cylinder retainer slot after applying gm p/n 12345996 lubricant or equivalent on the detent pins and cylinder retainer while using the specified paste-type grease. The side Door Lock Cylinder contains five snap-in tumblers that include a brass retainer tumbler in positions 1-5 alongside standard tumblers located in positions 6-10.
