A: To service and repair the Ignition Lock Cylinder one has to resort on key identification and repair, start which the four-character key code marked on the knockout side of the key are and make sure that the keyway plan prohibits the model key of other model lock cylinder from entering the keyway design of the current model lock cylinder. Once you have written down the code numbers, cut a blank key to the appropriate key-length of the each tumbler position and test its function in the lock cylinder. New lock cylinders, but for ignition lock cylinders, are available from the service parts warehouse equipped with new locking bars and tumblers that must be assembled as required. To assembling and coding ignition lock cylinders use the ignition lock holding fixture(J41340). Find the tumbler numbers and arrangement by aligning the key tip with the diagram on the encircled key and noting down the lowest visible tumbler numbers at positions 1 to 10. Put the tumblers into corresponding slots in coded sequence, take the side bar out until tumblers are in and put a tumbler spring above each tumbler. After that, lubricate the tumblers with superlube(R) gm p/n 12346241 or similar and then insert the spring retainer prongs into slots at the end of each cylinder and push it down until fully seated. Check for automated tumbler by capturing the spring retainer and turning the key into the cylinder and the side bar at the barrel diameter appears. Undertake the necessary disassembly and reassembly if necessary, but in a proper manner. Secure the cylinder in the j41340 in such a way that spring retainer is face up and under punch slots and push the cylinder into the j41340 till it butts against the cylinder and tighten that holding screw. Secure the bezel end of the retainer in an in-position condition by grasping the flat side of the punch, the part of the punch j41340 against the cylinder bezel and staking the bezel across the retainer corners over the lock cylinder metal. Repeat the staking process from the other end of the retainer after which you loosen holding screw and removed the cylinder from the j41340 ensuring that the retainer is staked well & restaking if need be. Pre-lubricate and jaunt the cylinder retainer slot with the retainer spring and retainer (paste type not spray). Finally, lubricate the detent pins and the cylinder retainer with gm p/n 12345996 or the equivalent as required. The side Door Lock Cylinder has 5 snap in tumblers: slots 1-5 being brass retainer tumbler and slots 6-10 being standard tumbler slots and only the latter to encode.
