2006 Chevrolet Corvette Flywheel Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the engine flywheel while ensuring proper procedures to avoid damage on 2006 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: The procedures for engine Flywheel replacement must be performed correctly to protect the engine Crankshaft thrust bearing from any damage. Properly tilting down the rear of the driveline requires keeping enough space between the engine and dash panel components to avoid vehicle damage. Record the location of the Crankshaft end and Flywheel using marks before taking them off because manual transmission flywheels lack position alignment pins and need correct direction placement during reinstallation. Engine Flywheel does not automatically align with the Crankshaft flange upon installation but will connect through proper torque sequence for the engine Flywheel bolts. Automatic transmission prop shaft hubs and flex plates do not need replacement when service is required but must be treated as balanced components thus the complete engine Flywheel assembly requires replacement. Catalytic converters and driveline supports need removal for automatic transmission vehicles along with manual transmission clutch assemblies before the installation process begins. The technician first marks both the Crankshaft and Flywheel then takes out the engine Flywheel bolts and the engine Flywheel. When installing the Flywheel put the marks on the Crankshaft in line with the ones on the Flywheel before tightening it into position. The threadlock gm p/n 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) should be applied to Flywheel bolt threads beforeinstallation at their first position. Apply threadlock gm p/n 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) to the threads of the Flywheel bolts and install them until snug. Then tighten the engine Flywheel bolts in sequence to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) for the first pass and 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) for the second pass and 100 nm (74 ft. Lbs.) for the final pass. If equipped with an automatic transmission install the driveline support afterward followed by the clutch assembly installation for manual transmissions and the Catalytic Converter should be reinstalled as well.
