2006 Chevrolet Equinox Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Rack and Pinion Boot on 2006 Chevrolet Equinox?
A: First raise the vehicle while supporting its frame position then detach the tire assembly before starting work. Begin the service by uninstalling both the outer tie rod and jam nut before taking out the spring from the boot's exterior side. Cut away and throw out the inner crimp clamp. Remove the boot from the steering gear while cleaning away any grease accumulation and debris which affect the inner tie rod and boot contact surface. Check that the inner tie rod contains no moisture or debris and that both boot seal regions stay dry before installation. Professional installers are to use 3/4 of provided grease in the small end of the boot pocket alongside the rest going on the shaft area around the small end connection. Secure the boot's large end into the gear housing groove first before you put the boot in place with the large clamp set loosely instead of being crimped. Crimp the large clamp section of the keystone clamp pliers (J 22610) while checking that the small boot end remains seated properly in the groove of the inner Tie Rod End. Position the spring clamp at the boot's small end before placing the jam nut 174 mm (6.85 inches) from the boot clamp and finishing with the outer tie rod and wheel assembly. Inspect front wheel alignment afterward performing the necessary corrections.
