2006 Chevrolet SSR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace the Automatic Transmission Filter and Fluid on 2006 Chevrolet SSR?
A: The procedure for transmission fluid filter replacement starts by raising the vehicle along with supporting it while positioning a drain pan below the Oil Pan. The range selector cable bracket will require clearance by removing bolts if present to access the transmission Oil Pan Drain Plug and lower the pan without unplugging the cable. Start by removing the Oil Pan bolts from the front and sides while working on the rear bolts with 4 turns of loosening and using a rubber mallet to tap the pan before fluid drainage. Complete bolt removal from the Oil Pan will allow you to take off the Oil Pan along with its gasket. Twist the filter firmly and remove it next. Use pliers or another suitable tool when needed to extract a stuck filter seal from the pump hence discarding the seal afterward. Examine both fluid color and filter material under inspection for clutch material and bronze slivers and steel particles. Apply solvent to clean the surfaces of the transmission case and Oil Pan gasket where you will remove all traces of previous gasket material. Apply automatic transmission fluid on the new filter seal before inserting it into the transmission case where it gets tapped into position using a correct size socket. After installing the new filter, proceed to install the Oil Pan together with its new gasket. After putting back the range selector cable bracket reinstall its bolts using a torque of 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Among all bolts used for the Oil Pan apply an equal and alternate tightening process reaching 11 nm (97 inch lbs.) install the Oil Pan Drain Plug with gm p/n 12346004 sealant on its threads before fastening it to 18 nm (13 ft. Lbs.). Use dexron iii transmission fluid to achieve the specified fluid level while checking the initial cold fluid mark but also examine possible Oil Pan gasket leakage.
