2006 Chevrolet Tahoe Parking Brake Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Parking Brake Cable on the right rear for those without RPO NYS on 2006 Chevrolet Tahoe?
A: The first step for park brake cable replacement on right rear without RPO NYS begins with releasing the park brake then raising and supporting the vehicle. The right park brake cable of the first design in 1500 series requires tension relief by pulling on the front cable just before the equalizer followed by left rear cable removal from the equalizer bar and final separation from the frame bracket and guides. When working on a 1500 series second design or 2500 series model it is crucial to relieve tension by pulling down on the cable located in front of the equalizer before disconnecting it from the equalizer bar. The procedure starts by taking out the bolt from the rear axle clip but before doing so detach the cable from the differential clip then finally remove the mounting bracket using tapping of the locking tabs. To replace the cable start by disconnecting it from both side cable guides (15 series) and track bar clips as well as the lever (25 series) before removing it from the backing plate and retaining bracket. The new cable should be fitted properly through guides and body mounts before being placed on the backing plate until locking tabs click into place (15 series). Then attach the cable to the lever. Follow the same cable routing procedure to the backing plate for 25 series components then secure it to the lever. Secure the cable to the track bar by placing clips between its locators (15 series). Then mount the cable to the right and left side guides alongside the mounting bracket until locking tabs activate. Bolt the cable to the differential clips with a torque of 25 N.m (18 lb ft) while assessing the rear axle holding clip if it securely crimps the cable with manual pressure. To complete the cable installation connection attach the cable to the differential clip while 1500 series owners with the second cable version or 2500 series owners will attach the park brake cable to the equalizer bar through cable pull in front of the equalizer. A 1500 series vehicle with the first design cable needs its park brake cable to pass through the frame bracket and guides before it reconnects to the equalizer bar. Complete the process by taking away safety stands followed by vehicle lowering and adjusting the park brake cable.
