2006 GMC Canyon Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Replace the Automatic Transmission Filter and Fluid on 2006 GMC Canyon?
A: The first step to replace automatic transmission fluid and filter requires vehicle elevation using supports. The boot portion of the range selector cable must not be pulled. The procedure to detach the range selector cable from the transmission range selector lever ball stud involves using a flat-bladed tool to separate the cable end from the lever and subsequently removing the bolts securing the transmission range selector cable bracket to the transmission. Set aside the bracket for space clearance during pan lowering then place a suitable receptacle under the transmission Oil Pan. Only detach the Oil Pan bolts from the front and sides of the transmission but loosen the rear bolts by 4 turns before gently hitting the Oil Pan with a rubber mallet for drainage into the prepared container. Next disconnect the remaining Oil Pan bolts before you detach both the Oil Pan and its gasket. Squeeze the filter until downward twisting removes it, afterward dispose of the filter seal by using pliers or alternative tools if necessary. Check the fluid appearance and filter for bronze slivers or clutch material contamination as well as steel impurities. Assess both the transmission housing and Oil Pan Gasket surfaces by cleaning and drying them using solvent until all remaining gasket materials are gone. Apply automatic transmission fluid on the new filter seal before inserting it into the transmission housing while using a suitable socket for installation. You must connect both the new filter followed by the Oil Pan which uses a new gasket before you tighten the transmission case bolts to 16 nm (12 ft. Lbs.) in an alternating and balanced fashion. Place the used transmission fluid container to a safe disposal area then move the transmission range selector cable bracket onto the transmission before installing the bracket bolts while torquing them to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Set the automatic transmission range selector cable and lower the vehicle before filling it with dexron iii transmission fluid at the cold fluid level during the first fill. It is necessary to check for leaks in the Oil Pan Gasket before completing the task.
