2006 GMC Savana 3500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain and sprockets on 2006 GMC Savana 3500?
A: In order to replace Timing Chain and sprockets, remove Oil Pump and turn the Crankshaft till the timing marks will be reach to the Crankshaft on camshaft sprockets with the due care not to rotate Crankshaft assembly once the Timing Chain is removed to avoid damage to the piston assemblies or valves. Next, remove the camshaft sprocket bolts, camshaft sprocket, and Timing Chain. Remove the Crankshaft sprocket with the help of the j8433 pulley puller (J8433), j41816-2 Crankshaft end protector (J41816-2) and j41558 Crankshaft sprocket remover (J41558) before you remove the Crankshaft sprocket key if you need to. Clean and check the Timing Chain and sprockets. For installation, insert the key in the Crankshaft keyway, with the use of tapping pushing each end of the key in until it is seated. Mount the Crankshaft sprocket on the front end of the Crankshaft while lining up the Crankshaft key into the sprocket keyway, and apply the j41665 Crankshaft balancer and sprocket installer (J41665) to press the sprocket against the Crankshaft flange bottommost. Rotate the Crankshaft sprocket to the alignment mark 12 o'clock, so the camshaft sprocket locating pin is properly placed into the alignment hole, sprocket teeth meshes with the Timing Chain, and the alignment marks on the camshaft sprocket and Crankshaft sprockets are correctly aligned so that the camshaft sprocket alignment mark is at the 6 o'clock position. Install the camshaft sprocket and Timing Chain and adjust the cam shaft sprockets or the Crankshaft sprockets as required to achieve the timing marks and install and tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts to 35 nm (26 ft. Lbs.) before reinstalling the pump of oil.
