2006 GMC Sierra 1500 Oil Pan Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the oil pan on 2006 GMC Sierra 1500?
A: The first step to replace the Oil Pan involves vehicle lift and support followed by skid plate bolts removal along with plate removal if your model has a skid plate. Start by draining the oil through the Drain Plug and Oil Filter removal. When working with 2wd vehicles remove bolts securing the crossmember and bar system. For 4wd vehicles you need to take the additional step of removing the front differential carrier besides the front differential carrier. The replacement process begins with removing battery cable bracket bolts and Starter components while also taking away the transmission cover and positive battery cable clip bolts and disconnecting the oil level sensor electrical connector. The oil level sensor must be discarded immediately after removing manual or automatic transmission bolts. Begin by removing Oil Pan bolts and nuts before removing the Oil Pan. Dispose of the Oil Pan Gasket. The Oil Pan requires cleaning after which you should inspect this part properly. Apply a 5 mm wide (0.197 inch) and 25 mm long (1.0 inch) strip of adhesive gm p/n 12346141 (or equivalent) to both sides where the front cover joins the engine block and around the entire rear oil seal housing junction to the engine block. Position the glued Oil Pan Gasket into its groove on the Oil Pan during adhesive wetness and normalize the Oil Pan's front-to-block alignment to the engine block face or no further than 0.3 mm (0.011 inch). Reposition the Oil Pan against a straight edge and add the Oil Pan bolt and nut to their tight position before checking the Oil Pan-to-transmission housing gap with a feeler gauge. Continue adjustment operations until the measurement reaches within specified limits when the clearance measures beyond 0.3 mm (0.011 inch). Recheck the Oil Pan-to-transmission housing clearance after tightening the 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) bolts in their specified order. Screw a fresh Drain Plug o-ring seal into the Drain Plug before tightening it down to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). After installing a new oil level sensor keep it tight at 13 nm (115 inch lbs.) before installing the transmission cover with its bolts torqued to 12 nm (106 inch lbs.). Fasten automatic transmission and manual transmission bolts when applicable with 50 nm (37 foot pounds) torque. Reinstall the Starter followed by establishing power to the oil level sensor electrical connector. Then secure the positive battery cable clip bolt with 9nm torque (80 inch lbs.). Secure the battery cable bracket bolts to 12 nm torque (106 inch lbs.), except for units with 2wd where a crossmember and bolts require 100 nm (74 ft. Lbs. Torque). Install the front differential carrier and crossmember with bolts secured at 100 nm (74 ft. Lbs.) for vehicles with 4wd. After installation of the Oil Pan skid plate reinforce its position with bolts torqued to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). After applying engine oil to the gasket of the new Oil Filter use hand tools to install it while torquing it to 30 nm (22 ft. Lbs.). Lower the vehicle before filling it with the exact amount of high-quality engine oil.
