  A: The beginning point for intermediate steering shaft seal replacement starts with turning off the ignition and removing the key for locking the Steering Column. The installation of Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) allows you to remove the left closeout panel. Start with Steering Column intermediate shaft seal detachment from the column then remove the intermediate shaft to Steering Column pinch bolt before disconnecting the intermediate shaft from the column. Reduce the intermediate shaft's dimensions to create clearance before making three 1-inch cuts through the insulated area above the seal bolts for access. First disconnect the intermediate shaft seal bolts without disconnecting the intermediate shaft from the vehicle. Then extract the intermediate shaft seal from the inside of the vehicle. The lower intermediate shaft seal must be removed through the inside of the vehicle from its position on the intermediate shaft. Installation occurs by folding the lower intermediate shaft seal onto the upper intermediate shaft seal before setting the intermediate shaft seal onto its position within the vehicle. Position the intermediate shaft in place with the Steering Column before installing the upper intermediate shaft pinch bolt and tightening intermediate shaft seal bolts to 48 n.m (35 lb ft) and intermediate shaft seal bolts to 3 n.m (27 lb in). Before installing the left closeout panel, attach the intermediate shaft seal to the Steering Column while rotating the lower seal to achieve appropriate shaft to seal clearance. Start by supporting the vehicle before connecting the lower intermediate shaft seal to the steering gear and completing the procedure by lowering the vehicle back to the ground.
