2007 Cadillac XLR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and replace the Air Bag Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable on 2007 Cadillac XLR?
A: A user must disable the sir system before starting the air bag clock spring assembly / spiral cable replacement process. Before disconnecting either the Steering Column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear make sure the vehicle wheels face forward with the Steering Column in the lock position to avoid damaging the sir coil assembly. Check the Ignition Switch's lock position with the Steering Column anti rotation pin (J 42640). Start by removing the Steering Wheel from the shaft followed by a tilt lever pull if present then remove the lower trim cover and 2 torx(R) head screws below. You need to take out the two torx(R)-headed screws found on the upper trim cover and upper trim cover. To remove the sir coil from the Steering Shaft you must first detach the wire harness straps and remove its retaining ring while disposing of the coil if you are doing a replacement. During installation keep the new sir coil assembly exactly centered until you finish installation operations. Swing the sir coil assembly toward the turn signal cancel cam assembly's horn tower while guiding it around the Steering Shaft assembly until the retaining ring finds its position in the groove. To secure the upper trim cover use two torx(R) head screws at 1.5 n.m (13 lb in) torque and then attach the lower trim cover with two torx(R) head screws where tab engagement should be verified. Last, position the tilt lever handle into the Steering Column followed by Steering Wheel installation onto the Steering Shaft and sir system activation.
