2007 Chevrolet Equinox Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the shift cable on 2007 Chevrolet Equinox?
A: Start replacement of the shift control cable with the required tools that include fascia retainer remover (J 36346). Starting with the first step applies the parking brake and turns off the supplemental inflatable restraint system. The shift control range select lever needs to be set at the park position (P). The shift control cable retainer needs removal from the cowl stud near the Brake Master Cylinder before pulling back the spring-loaded cover to access the cable adjustment lock. The cable adjustment lock can be elevated to release each half of the Shift Cable for exposure of the retaining clip. The retaining clip should be removed to separate the shift control cable from both ends of the transaxle. You need to perform several steps before accessing the shift control end removal. Begin by eliminating the shift control lever knob along with the center trim bezel and console trim plate. The right side console trim panel must also be taken off next. The fascia retainer remover (J 36346) will be used to disconnect the shift control cable from the shift control range select lever pin followed by removing the cable from the shift control and grommet from the cowl. Two steps are needed before removing the cowl stud near the generator to remove its shift control cable retainer. Additionally, mark the cable path as you detach the retaining clips from the cowl. The fascia retainer remover tool (J 36346) should be used to disconnect the transaxle range switch lever from its bracket while removing the cable. Before attaching the transaxle end of the cable make sure the route is accurate then join it to the shift control cable bracket and transaxle range switch lever. The grommet needs to be secure during shift control end installation while the lever requires to stay in park position (P) before attaching the cable to both shift control and range select lever pin. Reassemble the console trim before you secure the shift control cable retainer to the cowl stud which is located near the power generator. The cable installation process concludes with retaining clip placement followed by pushing the transaxle end into the shift control end until the clip locks and positioning both levers in park (P) while securing the cable adjustment lock and readjusting the shift control cable retainer on the cowl stud near the Brake Master Cylinder.
