First use pliers to compress the snap ring ends then extract the pieces once easy removal does not occur. Lightly tap the bearing cup to reduce pressure. Position the exposed part of the bearing cup in a soft-jaw vise before tapping the propeller shaft yoke upwards with a hammer to free it from the assembly. Twist the propeller shaft to push the bearing cup from the yoke opposite end before removing all universal joint pieces. Check areas where the retaining ring fits for dirt, rust, and old ring parts. Clean these areas properly before adding new parts. Apply light grease to the needle bearings and put them into new universal joint journals before installation. Insert one bearing cup into the yoke half and turn the yoke ear downward while pushing the cross until the trunnion fits freely into position.
