  • Q: What Tools Are Required to Service and Repair the CV Joint Boot for the Wheel Drive Shaft Inner Joint and Seal Replacement on 2007 GMC Envoy?
    A: To service and repair the constant velocity joint boot for the wheel drive shaft inner joint and seal replacement include the following tools: snap ring pliers (J 8059), drive axle seal clamp plier (J 35566) and drive axle swage ring clamp tool (J 41048). Start by taking the clamp from the boot using side cutters and make sure that you do not damage the tripot housing. Use a hand grinder to cut swage ring, remove tripot housing and tria lobal tripot bu s hing from the half shaf t bar. Degrease the housing and spider assembly well, disposing the tripot bushing. Finally, wipe the transmission sealing surface free of any corrosion using a 320 grit 3m cloth before allowing the housing and spider assembly to dry free without probing the tripot spider assembly while taking care not to separate the tripot balls and needle rollers. Compress the tripot boot onto the halfshaft bar and use j 8059 to spread the spacer rings (1, 3) for spider extract. Discard the tripot boot and spacer rings, brush the halfshaft bar with wire brush, and check the condition of needle rollers, needle bearings, trunnion, and tripot housing. Replace the broken components with an appropriate kit. For assembly, apply the new swage on boot neck without swaging and adjust the new small swage clamp and boot onto the halfshaft bar. Make sure the boot neck is in the groove, then swage the clamp using j 41048 aligning it. Tighten the bolts by hand until it is just right, align the boot, halfshaft bar, and swage clamp, and then tighten bolts 180-degrees at a time with a utensil wrench. Loosen the bolts and divide the dies, re-swaging in the event of deformities in the swage clamp. Assemble the joint with the convolute retainer properly in its place, grasping four convolutions, and make sure that the rings are seated fully. Mount the spacer ring and spider assembly onto halfshaft bar and install the other spacer ring in the groove at the end of the halfshaft bar, ensuring full seating. Fill the boot and housing with the premeasured grease from the kit, then set the large retaining clamp on the boot, then inst back the housing and new trilobal tripot bushing over the spider assembly . Lastly, fasten the large retaining clamp and boot onto the housing with the help of j 35566 and detach the convolute retainer from the boot.
