- Q: How to replace the rear CV Boot and CV Joint on the inner drive shaft on 2008 Chevrolet Equinox?A: Start boot and inner joint replacement by first securing the wheel drive shaft bar in a soft jawed vise. The small seal clamp should be cut away with side cutters before you use a flat-bladed tool to remove the large seal retaining clamp which is also discarded. Pull the seal off its holding position through the large diameter on the tripot housing until it slides along the axle shaft. Thoroughly wipe away residual grease from both the spider face of the tripot and inside of its housing. Follow this by disassembling the housing from both the spider and shaft. First detach the retaining ring from the drive shaft bar's groove and extract the spider assembly before removing the bar's seal. Use an appropriate solvent to clean all parts before removing all grease substances and moisture with compressed air. The inspection must evaluate tripot joint components for signs of abnormal wear or damage or cracking to replace any faulty components. Installation starts with placing the small seal clamp on the seal before inner seal application onto the wheel drive shaft bar while positioning the seal clamp correctly in the seal groove. Measure the gap width of the small seal clamp with J 35910 Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35910). The clamp gap must not exceed 2.15 mm (0.085 in). Lay down the tripot spider assembly onto the wheel drive shaft bar until it touches the shoulder before fitting the retaining ring into its designated groove. Put half of the kit's grease into the seal and use the rest of the grease inside the tripot housing. Screw the large clamp onto the seal's large diameter before you fix the tripot housing onto its spider-aged placement on the wheel drive shaft bar. Use the large seal dimension to cover the tripot housing and place the seal's lip face down inside the housing groove. Use the J 35910 Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35910) on the large seal retaining clamp to secure the seal. Adjust the tool's tension until the clamp ear gap dimension measures 1.9 mm (5/64 in). The housing requires a circular rotation for uniform grease distribution in the tripot joint.
