2008 Chevrolet Express 3500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the A/C Orifice Tube in an A/C system on 2008 Chevrolet Express 3500?
A: The first step to replace the expansion (orifice) tube is to recover all refrigerant from the a/c system. Apply the orifice tube remover and installer (J 26549-E) to detach the expansion tube after removing the Evaporator hose retaining nut from the Evaporator. The expansion tube can be removed by first clearing impacted residue then applying heat from a heat gun or hair dryer at 7 mm (0.25 in) from dimples on the inlet pipe and using the orifice tube remover and installer (J 26549-E) to grip the expansion tube while performing turning movements for loosening before pulling the tube out. Install the shorter screen end of the Evaporator first while coating its o-ring seal with 525 viscosity refrigerant oil and then use the orifice tube remover and installer (J 26549-E) to install the expansion tube. The installation process begins with mounting the newly installed sealing washers to the Evaporator tube after which the Evaporator hose should be attached to the unit followed by tightening the Evaporator hose retaining nut to 16 n.m (12 lb ft). Evacuate and recharge the a/c system and conduct a fitting leak test of the components through the halogen leak detector (J 39400-A).
