Q: How to Service and Repair Brake Lines Using the J 45405 Pipe Flaring Tool Kit on 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
A: To service and repair the brake pipes; use the J 45405 Pipe Flaring Tool Kit (J 45405) and make sure to use double-walled steel brake pipe to escape brake system failure. Start with the inspection of the area of the brake pipe to be replaced and its release from retainers if necessary. If the brake pipe needs to be sectioned, choose the desired random location away from bent or mounting points, measure the length of the pipe to be replaced, and add the flares required on pipe diameter. 6.35 mm (0.250 in) for 4.76 mm (3/16 in), 9.50 mm (0.374 in) for 6.35 mm (1/4 in), and 12.67 mm (0.499 in) respectively for 7.94 mm (5/16 in). Use the pipe cutter provided in the J 45405 (J 45405) to cut the brake pipe squarely and decide on the right size of brake pipe and tube nuts. If necessary, remove the nylon coating from the end of the brake pipe with the coating stripping tool supplied within the J 45405 (J 45405), with the provision of ensuring that the right blade size is used. De-bur the inside and outside diameter of the pipe with the de-burring tool that is included with the J 45405 (J 45405), then install the tube nuts and de-bur with any contaminants from the brake pipe and the J 45405 (J 45405). Turn the die clamping screw of the new J 45405 (J 45405) counter-clockwise, choose the die set corresponding to it, and install the die halves into the die cage. Place the prepared end of the pipe to be flared into the back of the dies and be sure that it fits correctly; after that, activate the lever for the J 45405 (J 45405) and create the flare. Inspect the flare and ensure that it has the right shape and diameter. 6.74-7.10mm (0.265-0.279in) for 4.76mm (3/16in), 8.57-9.27mm (0.344-0.358 in) for 6.35mm (1/4in) and 10.42-10.79mm (0.410-0.425 in) for 7.94mm (5/16in). Form the new pipe with a proper brake pipe bending tool if needed; keep a clearance of 19 mm (3/4 in) from all moving parts when installing and fixing the brake pipe to the retainers. Finally, bleed the hydraulic brake system and check out brake pipe flares for leaks with the engine running and brakes applied.
