2009 Chevrolet Cobalt Parking Brake Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear parking brake cable for disc brakes on 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: Begin the parking brake rear cable replacement for disc brakes by taking away the front floor console and ensuring complete release of the park brake lever. Adjusting the nut should be done until all tension from the park brake cables releases using hand tools only. Proceed by taking out the rear seat lower cushion together with the rear carpet retainers so you can move the carpet aside to expose the rear park brake cables and body pass-thru grommets. Before pulling the rear brake cable from the lever assembly users need to release the rear cable fitting at the park brake lever bracket and detach the appropriate rear brake end cable from the cable equalizer. Before proceeding release the body pass-thru grommet of the rear park brake cable while then elevating the vehicle. The underbody retainer requires tab release when replacing the park brake cable or when keeping the existing cable. Use careful pressure on the c-shaped piece of the retainer which is located at the rear axle trailing arm pivot to disconnect the bracket then extract the cable from under the vehicle body. Access the park brake cable end by removing the tire assembly and wheel followed by breaking the caliper connection through depressing the flat-bladed screwdriver on the retaining tabs holding the cable bracket in place. Remove the guide retaining bolt of the park brake cable and pull out the cable. The installation process begins with caliper placement of the park brake cable into the cable bracket. Then install the rear park brake cable guide retaining bolt while tightening it to 10 nm (89 lb in). The cable fitting should lock into the cable bracket with all retaining tabs seated. Last, connect the cable end to the caliper park brake lever. Reinstall the rear tire while installing the cable through the open underbody until the c-shaped retainer fits the park brake cable bracket on the rear axle trailing arm pivot. Secure the park brake cable pass-thru grommet to the vehicle underbody opening while also fastening the new underbody retainer to its designated position if replacing the cable. For reused components continue by installing the cable onto the underbody retainer then pushing both tabs into place. Lower the vehicle then connect the cable fitting to the park brake lever bracket for a retention check by attempting a cable pull attempt. After connecting the cable end to the cable equalizer you should move the carpet away and reinstall the rear carpet retainers and rear seat lower cushion. The last step involves adjusting and reinstalling the front floor console following the park brake cable tension process.
