• Q: How to replace the intermediate steering shaft on 2009 Chevrolet Impala?

  A: In order to replace the intermediate Steering Shaft, make sure that the front wheels are aligned and that the Steering Column is in the lock position to avoid misaligned and sir coil assembly damage. Start by installing the j 42640 (Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin) on the bottom of the Steering Column. Take out the front left tire and wheel assembly. Do the intermediate Steering Shaft gland seal at the steering gear to access the lower bolt and, in turn, take off the intermediate steer gear lower pinch bolt. Bail your intermediate Steering Shaft free of your steering gear and take your left instrument panel cover panel off. Reposition the intermediate Steering Shaft seal so that you can reach the bolt at the Steering Column and pop off the Steering Column bolt and nut, popping off the intermediate Steering Shaft to the Steering Column as well as your vehicle. For installation, align the intermediate Steering Shaft to the vehicle, install the intermediate Steering Shaft bolt to the Steering Column and tighten 62 nm (46 lb ft). Install the intermediate Steering Shaft seal onto the Steering Column, reinstall the left instrument panel insulator panel, mount the intermediate Steering Shaft to the power steering gear stub shaft, and install the intermediate Steering Shaft lower bolt at the steering gear and tighten the bolt to 48 nm (35 lb ft). Finally, mount the intermediate steering shaf secomt off te steering gear, reinstall tire and its wheel assembly, and remove the j 42640 (Steering Column anti-rotation pin).
