- Q: How to replace the inner tie rod on 2009 Chevrolet Impala?A: The initial step for inner Tie Rod replacement involves boot removal followed by inner Tie Rod inspection; if deterioration or contamination exist then the steering gear replacement is needed. The gear should be placed in the vise while maintaining the steering gear preload adjustment at its original position to prevent equipment damage. Slide the shock dampener off the rack as you detach it from the inner Tie Rod assembly. Apply a pipe wrench near the inner Tie Rod housing on the rack while using another wrench on the flats of the inner Tie Rod housing to twist it counterclockwise until rack separation occurs. Follow the same steps to detach the inner Tie Rod from the rack by taking the shock dampener from the inner Tie Rod housing. The inner Tie Rod threads require cleaning before application of loctite(R) 262 or equivalent thread lubricant for attaching the rod to the rack. First use a pipe wrench on the rack to apply torque then use j 34028 torques on the inner Tie Rod housing while tightening it to 100 nm (74 lb ft). Perform the same procedure for the inner Tie Rod before declaring the male rack properly staked to its assembly housing. A 0.25 mm gage should be used to verify that the rack and its housing stake have no space between them. Close the shock dampener around the inner Tie Rod housing until it reaches complete seating then restore the Rack and Pinion Boot.
