2010 Chevrolet Impala Steering Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the intermediate steering shaft on 2010 Chevrolet Impala?
A: Installation of the intermediate Steering Shaft requires initial Steering Wheel immobilization through j 42640 (Steering Column Anti-rotation Pin). This immobilization prevents Steering Wheel rotation that could harm the sir system. Lock the Steering Wheel first before removing the front left tire and wheel assembly. Drain the intermediate Steering Shaft's seal fluid around the steering gear to gain access to the lower bolt followed by applying paint to establish alignment marks on both parts. Disassemble the intermediate Steering Shaft by removing its lower pinch bolt from the steering gear while also removing the Steering Shaft from the gear housing. Progress by removing the left instrument panel insulator panel and sliding the intermediate Steering Shaft seal into position to expose the steering column bolt. Paint the alignment of the intermediate shaft and steering column before using a wrench to remove the steering column's intermediate shaft bolt and nut resulting in disconnection and eventual shaft removal from the vehicle. When installing new intermediate steering shafts first apply match marks from the old shaft to the new component then put the shaft in place and adjust alignment before connecting it to the steering column. Screw in the intermediate Steering Shaft bolt at the steering column until torque reaches 62 nm (46 lb ft). Position the intermediate Steering Shaft seal onto the steering column followed by reinstallation of the left instrument panel insulator panel and match marks alignment and subsequent connection of the intermediate Steering Shaft to the power steering gear stub shaft. Position the intermediate Steering Shaft seal onto the steering gear while you install the intermediate Steering Shaft lower bolt at the steering gear. Then tighten to 48 nm (35 lb ft) and remove the j 42640 pin and reinstall the tire and wheel assembly.
