2009 Chevrolet Malibu Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the front disc brake pads on 2009 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: Check the level of fluid in the brake master cylinder reservoir before replacing front disc brake pads. If the level is past mid-point between the maximum-full point and the minimum alarmable level, remove brake fluid to the mid-point. Lift and support the vehicle then deflate the tire and wheel assembly first. Mount and firmly hand tighten 2 wheel nuts opposite lug studs to hold rotor to hub. Unscrew the brake caliper lower guide pin bolt and hold the brake caliper using heavy mechanic wire to avoid any hydraulic flexible brake hose damage. Pivot the caliper upwards without disconnection of the hose and attach it. Take off the brake pads from caliper mounting bracket, and drive the piston of the disc brake caliper inside the caliper bore using an old inner disc Brake Pad and a disc brake piston installation tool. You have to disconnect the Brake Pad retainers from the calper bracket and also clean the mating surfaces of it from any dirt and rust. Check the brake caliper guide pins for movement and the guide pin boots condition. Replace any restricted, loose, seized, or damaged. Make sure the Brake Pad hardware mating surfaces are clean; install the Brake Pad retainers to the Brake Caliper Bracket with the wear sensor equipped disc Brake Pad mounted inboard of the rotor and with the leading edge facing the brake rotor. Install the brake pads to the caliper bracket, remove the support ,and turn the brake caliper into position over the pads and to the caliper mounting bracket. Mount the lower brake caliper guide pin bolt and tighten it to 35 nm (26 lb ft). Two-way wheel brakes cover (tire and wheel assembly), wheel nut, brake rotor to hub, and lower vehicle. With the engine turned off, gradually press the brake pedal 2/3 of its pedal travel path before letting it out. Wait for 15 seconds, and then once again press on the brake pedal until solid resistance is reached gets the brake caliper pistons and brake pads seated in place. Finally, fill the master cylinder auxiliary tank to the proper level and burnish the pads and rotors.
