2009 Chevrolet Malibu Rack And Pinion Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the front Rack and Pinion steering gear (EPS) on 2009 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: Before replacing the Rack And Pinion (EPS), start by making sure the wheels of the vehicle are straight ahead and vehicle secured the Steering Wheel by using a Steering Column anti-rotation pin, steering column lock or strap b. This is to protect the sir system from damage. Assure Steering Column, intermediate shaft(s), and the Rack And Pinion are disconnected, not rotating the Steering Wheel nor turning the front tires or one may un-center the sir coil assembly. If the sir coil seems un-centered, then the centering steps for the sir coil should be followed. Start by bringing the front wheels straight forward, securing the Steering Wheel. Then, disconnect the steering linkage outer tie rods from the steering knuckles, sever the intermediate Steering Shaft from the Rack And Pinion, take off the transmission rear mount bolt and then remove the Rack And Pinion bolts, nuts, and washers off. Twist the Rack And Pinion's place so as to pull it on via the left front window, and move any needed components. For installation, place the Rack And Pinion directly on the left front wheel opening, remember to hand start all bolts and nuts before finalizing torque. Mount the Rack And Pinion bolts, nuts, and converge washers and apply 70 nm (52 lb ft) plus an additional 90° to the Rack And Pinion bolts and nut, and then the transmission rear mount bolt at 90 nm (66 lb ft). Connect the intermediate Steering Shaft to Rack And Pinion and the steering linkage outer tie rods back to the steering knuckles. Last, align the front toe if required.
