2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the oil pan on 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
A: Begin by raising the vehicle then supporting it until work is completed. Start by removing both the Oil Pan skid plate bolts and plate if equipped and draining the oil by removing the Drain Plug together with the Oil Filter. To remove the crossmember components from 2-wheel drive vehicles you must remove both bolts and the bar. For 4-wheel drive vehicles follow the above procedure then take out the front differential carrier. Begin by removing boltes securing the bracket and transmission cover. Then remove the engine harness bracket and transmission tube bracket. First remove all manual and automatic transmission bolts before removing Oil Pan bolts and nuts to detach the Oil Pan while discarding the worn-out gasket. After inspection you should maintain the Oil Pan condition. A 5 mm (0.197 in) wide strip of adhesive should be applied across both the front cover to engine block junction and the rear oil seal housing to engine block junction. Always install the new Oil Pan Gasket when the adhesive remains fresh so it canbond correctly. Place the Oil Pan panel flush to the engine block or advance it by 0.3 mm (0.011 in) forward before installing it together with the gasket force fitting into the grooves. Follow the specified order when tightening all Oil Pan bolts and nuts to 25 nm (18 lb ft). Verify the Oil Pan-to-transmission housing gap at each measurement point and make adjusted according to requirements. Seal the Drain Plug with a new o-ring before torquing it to 25 nm (18 lb ft). Snap the transmission cover back into place while torquing bolts to 12 nm (106 lb in). Follow this order for reinstallation: manual and automatic transmission bolts first, then engine wire harness bracket bolts followed by the engine harness and transmission tube bracket bolt which needs tensioning to 9 nm (80 lb in). Thestarter installation follows with oil level sensor electrical connector connection and engine harness bracket bolt torquing to 12 nm (106 lb in). The crossmember and its bolts require a final tightening torque of 100 nm (74 lb ft) when 2wd is present. The front differential carrier and crossmember must be installed on 4wd vehicles and tighteners to 100 nm (74 lb ft). Reinstall the Oil Pan skid plate and secure its bolts with a torque of 20 nm (15 lb ft). Apply clean engine oil to the Oil Filter gasket before installing the filter which requires a torque setting at 30 nm (22 lb ft). Afterward, lower the vehicle dirty and replace it with correct engine oil at required capacity and quality.
