2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Timing Chain Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft timing chain, sprocket, and tensioner on 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
A: The first step for camshaft Timing Chain replacement along with sprocket and tensioner work involves stripping the Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor reluctor ring. Drive a 7/16-20 x 1 inch bolt through the Crankshaft's end point after aligning the timing marks for Timing Chain removal to stop piston-valve contact. Both sprocket timing marks must be lined up while the number 4 cylinder stays at top dead center compression position. First uninstall the Timing Chain tensioner shoe from its pin attachment before removing both camshaft sprocket bolts and the camshaft sprocket and Timing Chain. Remove both components by using j 5825-a and an open-end wrench on the Crankshaft sprocket before extracting the Crankshaft balancer key. When required, uninstall the Timing Chain tensioner bracket bolt and bracket before cleaning and inspecting both the sprockets and chain. Tighten the Timing Chain tensioner bracket's bolt to 12 nm (106 lb in) if installation is required. Place the key in the Crankshaft keyway while keeping it parallel to slightly upward and position the Crankshaft sprocket's keyway with the balancer key. Put the Crankshaft sprocket into place through j 5590 while ensuring the camshaft sprocket alignment mark rests at the 6 o'clock position. Place the distributed Timing Chain around the Crankshaft sprocket before setting it on the driver side of the engine block. Position the top section of the shoe under the bracket tab before installing the shoe onto its bracket. Insert the camshaft Timing Chain sprocket into the Timing Chain so that the camshaft alignment marks will align after installing them onto the camshaft. Manual installation of the camshaft sprocket should be done without hammering because it could pop out the expansion cup plug. Torque the camshaft sprocket bolts to 25 nm (18 lb ft) with the Crankshaft sprocket angled at the 12 o'clock position and the camshaft sprocket adjacent to the 6 o'clock position. Place the Crankshaft ckp sensor reluctor ring after you remove the bolt installed at the Crankshaft end.
