2009 Chevrolet Traverse Cam Gear Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Replace the Cam Gear in a Variable Valve Timing Actuator on Bank 1 Exhaust on 2009 Chevrolet Traverse?
A: The camshaft position actuator on bank 1 (Right Side) exhaust replacement process starts with Intake Manifold and right camshaft cover removal. Begin by removing both right camshaft position sensors and solenoid actuators for the intake and exhaust. Detach the crankshaft balancer bolt and shift it clockwise until both camshafts reach a neutral position that allows marking of the camshaft Timing Chain and position actuators for reassembly. Position marks on the Timing Chain links should be made alongside the adjacent teeth on both the exhaust and intake camshaft position actuators. With an open-end wrench steer both camshafts toward one another until the chain has enough slack before inserting the en-48313 (Timing Chain Retention Tool) legs and placing the tool between the actuators with the top mark facing the cylinder head. Expand the en-48313 legs sufficiently to establish contact with the Timing Chain before installing the tool with hand force. Prevent the engine from rotating by using an open-end wrench on the camshaft to loosen the position actuator bolt before removing the right exhaust camshaft position actuator with its bolt and draping the Timing Chain over the en-48313 when both actuators are being replaced. Make sure to select the ex-marked camshaft position actuator during installation while aligning its timing mark with the identified Timing Chain link. Use an open wrench to tighten the actuator bolt to 58 nm (43 lb ft) to prevent rotational movement and then reinstall the right intake and exhaust camshaft position actuator solenoids and sensors before installing the right camshaft cover and Intake Manifold.
