2009 Chevrolet Traverse Cam Gear Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace the Cam Gear in a Variable Valve Timing Actuator on Bank 2 Exhaust on 2009 Chevrolet Traverse?
A: The first steps for swapping out the camshaft position actuator on bank 2 (Left Side) exhaust are to take out the Intake Manifold and the left camshaft cover. Then, take out both the left intake and exhaust camshaft position sensors, and proceed to take out the left intake and exhaust camshaft position actuator solenoids. Adjust the crankshaft balancer bolt clockwise so the camshafts sit in a neutral position, keeping in mind to mark the Timing Chain and actuators so they go back in the right way. Make sure to mark the Timing Chain and the adjacent teeth on both sides of both camshaft position actuators. Use an open-end wrench to press the camshafts together to create slack, and afterwards turn the en-48313 counterclockwise to withdraw its legs. Put the en-48313 between the camshaft actuators, with the feet positioned toward the front, and start to open the legs by rotating the t-shaped handle clockwise. Guide the leg of the tool behind the Timing Chain Guide, and keep expanding it until it touches the Timing Chain, then simply hand-tighten the en-48313. Keep rotating the camshafts and check that the en-48313 is in place, since this will hold the Timing Chain in its position. Put an open-end wrench on the crankshaft pulley to stop the engine from turning while you loosen the left exhaust camshaft position actuator bolt, and then pull out the bolt and actuator, matching the hole in the actuator with the cam sensor boss on removal. Be sure to set in the correct actuator with the ex mark, line up the actuator with the Timing Chain Guide marks made earlier, and start the bolt by hand. Take off the en-48313 and fasten the exhaust camshaft position actuator bolt to 58 nm (43 lb ft). At the end, put back the left intake and exhaust camshaft position actuator solenoids, the left intake and exhaust camshaft position sensors, the left camshaft cover, and the Intake Manifold.
