2009 GMC Savana 1500 Timing Chain Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft timing chain and sprocket on 2009 GMC Savana 1500?
A: The Oil Pump needs removal before proceeding with camshaft Timing Chain and sprocket replacement. A proper sequence for component replacement demands the avoidance of Crankshaft turnstile operations when the Timing Chain is absent to maintain Piston assembly and valve system health. Line up the timing marks on both the Crankshaft sprocket together with the camshaft sprocket before starting the rotation. Start by removing the camshaft sprocket bolt (206) followed by taking out both the camshaft sprocket (205) and Timing Chain (208). To do this procedure first remove bolts numbered 231 followed by the Timing Chain Tensioner 232. Start by removing the Crankshaft sprocket (207) using j 41816-2 , j 41558 , along with bolts and j 8433 . When replacement is required, remove the key and continue with sprocket removal. Begin key installation by inserting the key piece into the Crankshaft keyway followed by tapping the key (122) until both ends settle into position while installing the Crankshaft sprocket (207) in perfect alignment with the keyway. First fully position the Crankshaft sprocket against the Crankshaft flange using tools j 41478 and j 41665 and then rotate the sprocket so its alignment mark lines up at the 12 o'clock point. The installation requires compressing the Timing Chain Tensioner guide before adding the en 46330. Start by installing the Timing Chain Tensioner (232) and its bolts (231) while applying torque to 25 nm (18 lb ft). Ensure proper mating of sprocket teeth and Timing Chain alongside accurate alignment between camshaft and Crankshaft sprocket marks. Position both the camshaft sprocket (205) and Timing Chain (208) while attaching bolt (206). Verify that the camshaft sprocket's mark indicates the 6 o'clock direction and the Crankshaft sprocket points to 12 o'clock. Install the automatic transmission flex plate and its bolts temporarily while a j 42386-a mounting tool and its two bolts (one M10-1.5 x 120 mm and one M10-1.5 x 45 mm) are in place for proper j 42386-a tool operation. Tighten the j 42386-a bolts to 50 nm (37 lb ft). Begin with a 75 nm (55 lb ft) torque at the camshaft sprocket bolt then add a final 50-degree rotation using the j 45059 tool. To complete the procedure remove the automatic transmission flex plate and bolts while reinstalling the Oil Pump.
