• Q: How to service and repair the valve guide seal, replace the valve stem oil seal, and valve spring on 2009 GMC Savana 3500?

  A: When servicing the Valve Stem Oil Seal requires you to take off the valve Rocker Arm first. Use your fingers to remove the electrical connection on each Spark Plug boot by turning them half a turn before pulling to detach from the explosion system. Begin working with the spark plugs when the engine hits room temperature by rotating them 1 or 2 turns first and applying light bristle or air cleaning prior to removal. Insert (J 22794) into the Spark Plug hole and connect an air hose. Release compressed air to keep the valves closed in their proper position. Set (J 38606) on the valve spring. After removing valve stem keys you can let the spring tension off. Take off (J 38606) valve spring cap, valve spring, Valve Stem Oil Seal and shim (1, 5). Thoroughly wash both the valve spring area and shim space while applying clean engine oil to the valve guide and Valve Stem Oil Seal. Then put the Valve Stem Oil Seal and shim (1, 5) into place. Press the valve spring into place as you set the valve spring cap and valve spring with (J 38606) tool. Insert the valve keys gently and apply grease to the valve stem grooves. After unwinding valve spring pressure let the keys stay in place before taking out the compressor tool. Use a plastic hammer up to seat the keys if needed. Hand start the Spark Plug port by rotating (J 22794) then secure the Spark Plug by tightening to 15 nm (11 lb ft). Check each Spark Plug wire connection on the ignition coil and Spark Plug. Push on the wire boot to validate proper installation while fixing any loose boot placements. Fit the last part of the assembly into position.
