2010 GMC Canyon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to safely disconnect and reconnect the negative battery cable on 2010 GMC Canyon?
A: When disconnecting the battery negative cable you should protect your eyes because the battery produces explosive gases and contains corrosive acid that can burn your skin. Turn off all electrical loads and place the ignition and start switch in off mode to stop electrical sparks during battery work. When operating a vehicle with onstar(R) (UE1) and back up battery you must not remove its main battery or Fuse when the ignition key is in any position other than off because rap must time out before disconnecting power through the driver door. The onstar(R) back up battery (BUB) system activates when rap power remains on or the Ignition Switch stays on resulting in permanent damage to the non-rechargeable back up battery. Start by writing down the radio's presets and theft codes followed by switching off all accessories before locking the ignition. Locate and carefully loosen the negative cable's connecting nut then disconnect the negative cable from the battery by hand. After cleaning battery terminal and cable corrosion with a wire brush the technician connects the negative Battery Cable to the battery while tightening the nut to 9 nm torque (80 lb in). All preset codes along with theft codes need resetting in the radio system before completion of the service.
