2010 GMC Canyon Timing Chain Tensioner Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain tensioner on 2010 GMC Canyon?
A: Begin the Timing Chain Tensioner replacement after you remove both camshaft cover and the engine front cover. Rotate the Crankshaft clockwise until the #1 Piston is at top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke. Mount the j 44221 (Camshaft Holding Tool) onto the rear part of the camshafts. The reference marks on the exhaust camshaft position actuator sprocket, intake camshaft sprocket and Crankshaft sprocket allow you to mark the adjacent Timing Chain links. Release Timing Chain tension using tensioner shoe movement until proper position is reached. Then insert a spanner onto the tensioner to maintain shoe position. The engine receives the Timing Chain Tensioner and all its attaching bolts for removal. During fitting install the Timing Chain Tensioner onto the engine while securing its bolts at 25 nm (18 lb ft). After releasing tension from the Timing Chain through the tensioner tee removal the j44221 can be taken off the camshafts. Place the marked Timing Chain links adjacent to the timing marks found on both the exhaust camshaft position actuator sprocket and intake camshaft sprocket and Crankshaft sprocket. Finish the installation with the engine front cover followed by the camshaft cover.
