2010 GMC Canyon Oil Pan Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the oil pan on 2010 GMC Canyon?
A: The first step for an Oil Pan replacement is to eliminate the oil level indicator system and tube before taking off the engine protection shield. After draining engine oil you need to remove essential components to create space for Oil Pan removal. Rwd vehicles need the power steering gear to be removed before proceeding. Start by removing the front propeller shaft and differential carrier assembly bushing to frame bolts to succeed in pulling the differential carrier assembly downwards while maintaining the pinion yoke static to stop rotation. Service slot plug removal requires transmission fuel hose/pipe bracket nuts along with four lower transmission mounting bolts that anchor the Oil Pan. During 4wd specific installations the power steering gear mounting bolts must be removed so you can pull the gear down. The engine wiring harness retainers must be detached from the Oil Pan before the removal of Oil Pan bolts. Fasten two bolts into the threaded holes behind the Oil Pan so they operate as jack screws then adjust the bolts evenly to separate the Oil Pan from the engine block before removing them both from the assembly. Examine the engine block sealing base after cleaning it. While installing the Oil Pan apply sealer with a 5.5 mm (0.22 in) bead on designated pan areas while using a 3 mm (0.12 in) bead on another marked spot without allowing sealer to reach the oil pump pipe and screen assembly. Place the Oil Pan to the engine block while making sure the rear Oil Pan surface matches the rear block surface. When the transmission is gone use a straight edge to keep parts in alignment. The Oil Pan must reach its maximum position toward the transmission mounting surface when the transmission remains installed. Fitting the Oil Pan bolts requires a side torque setting of 25 nm (18 lb ft) while each end bolt needs 10 nm (89 lb in). Mount the engine wiring harness retainers onto the position provided on the Oil Pan. The power steering gear must be raised toward the frame assembly before installing mounting bolts for a 4wd system. After bolt installation, use 50 nm (37 lb ft) torque for the four lower transmission mounting bolts before tightening the fuel hose/pipe bracket nuts to 20 nm (15 lb ft). Replace the service slot plug and other parts by reinstalling power steering gear for rwd or differential carrier assembly for 4wd and tighten bushing to frame bolts to 152 nm (112 lb ft) before reinstalling front propeller shafts. Place the engine protection shield before installing the oil level indicator and tube then filling engine oil.
