2010 GMC Canyon Camshaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft on 2010 GMC Canyon?
A: As a first step to replace the Camshaft start by removing the Camshaft cover together with the Camshaft position (CMP) sensor. Manually rotate the Crankshaft counterclockwise to reach top dead center compression position for Piston number one. The j 44221 Camshaft holding tool must be installed behind the camshafts before removing the intake and exhaust Camshaft sprocket bolts which should be discarded afterward. Tighten the two bolts holding the j 44222 Camshaft sprocket holding tool to the front of the Cylinder Head before seeking correct horizontal bolt adjustment into the exhaust Camshaft phaser actuator sprocket to properly slide the sprockets off the camshafts for Timing Chain tension maintenance. Position the j 44222 onto the Cylinder Head before setting its horizontal bolts aiming at the Camshaft sprockets to achieve chain tension. Use the j 44222 to move Camshaft sprockets with their timing chains off the camshafts while loosening the cap bolts sequentially until all the valve spring pressure is eliminated before placing the caps into a rack for correct reinstallation later. First remove the Camshaft caps while pulling out the j 44221 from the camshafts before extracting the camshafts from the Cylinder Head. The j 44221 must be installed with the Camshaft flat portion facing up while the #1 Piston rests at tdc after applying clean engine oil to all Camshaft journals and thrust face and lobes. Install the intake and exhaust camshafts by placing them in their original positions while ensuring their Camshaft cap markings show the arrow facing forward and providing the position number from the engine front with "e" for exhaust and "i" for intake. The correct placement of Camshaft caps should follow their installed identification marks, while Camshaft cap bolts require even tightening to 12 nm (106 lb in) to achieve proper valve spring compression. A 25 mm (1 in) wrench on the hex of the camshafts should be used to achieve sprocket alignment by making sure the alignment pins properly engage. Use caution to transfer the sprockets that contain Timing Chain elements from the j 44222 to the Camshaft areas before taking out the j 44222 component. Use a j 45059 angle meter to tighten a new intake Camshaft sprocket bolt to 20 nm (15 lb ft) and an additional 100 degrees and a new exhaust Camshaft actuator bolt to 25 nm (18 lb ft) with an additional 135 degrees. Proceed by taking out j 44221 from the camshafts while adding the cmp sensor before replacing the Camshaft cover.
