2010 GMC Canyon Timing Chain Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft timing chain and sprocket on 2010 GMC Canyon?
A: To replace the Camshaft Timing Chain and sprocket, begin by removing the #1 cylinder spark plug, the Camshaft cover, the Camshaft position (CMP) sensor, and the engine front cover. Rotate the Crankshaft clockwise until the #1 piston is at top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke. Mount the j 44221 Camshaft holding tool to the rear of the camshafts, alleviate the auto Timing Chain tension by moving the tensioner shoe inward, and put a tee in the tensioner to keep the shoe in place. Remove and dispose the bolt for exhaust Camshaft position actuator along with the actual actuator, followed by the bolt that fits the intake Camshaft sprocket and the sprocket itself. Next, take off the Timing Chain and Crankshaft sprocket. For installation, ensure the #1 piston is at tdc with the Crankshaft Timing Chain sprocket pin straight up. Install the Crankshaft sprocket, then intake Camshaft sprocket, ensuring the timing mark of the Timing Chain matches the dark link on the sprocket of intake Camshaft and so on. Route the Timing Chain through the cylinder head inlet and clip it onto the Crankshaft sprocket, align the dark link pointing to the timing mark. Mount the intake Camshaft sprocket on the intake Camshaft followed by installing a new intake Camshaft sprocket bolt by torque sealing the bolt to 20 nm (15 lb ft) plus 100-degree correct torque using the j 45059 angle meter. Make sure that the Camshaft actuator is in the fullest advanced position prior to installing the exhaust Camshaft actuator, aligning the dark link of the Timing Chain with the timing mark of the actuator sprocket. Use a 25 mm (1 in) wrench on the hex of the Camshaft to help in alignment, then slide the actuator over the exhaust Camshaft and fasten with a new bolt to 25nms (18 lb ft) plus an additional 135 degrees with the j 45059. Take off the tee from the Timing Chain Tensioner, and ensure the dark links on the Timing Chain are on the marks of the sprockets. Finally, reinstall the engine front cover, the Camshaft position (CMP) sensor, the Camshaft cover, and the #1 cylinder spark plug.
