2010 GMC Canyon Cam Gear Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Cam Gear on the Camshaft Position Exhaust Actuator on 2010 GMC Canyon?
A: The first step in camshaft position exhaust actuator replacement involves removing both the camshaft cover together with the cmp sensor. Place the Crankshaft in a clockwise direction until the #1 Piston reaches top dead center (TDC) compression stroke position and note the Timing Chain link next to the exhaust camshaft position actuator sprocket timing mark. First place the j-44221 (Camshaft Holding Tool) behind both camshafts before inserting the j-44217 (Timing Chain Retention Tool) with its j-44217-45 (Chain Holding Tool) attachment near Timing Chain shoes throughout both sides of the engine then tighten the wingnuts until hooks stay in place. After installation ensure the holding tools maintain their position on the hooks and that the gauge blocks securely rest along the edge of the head. Begin by removing and throwing away the exhaust camshaft position actuator bolt followed by extracting the exhaust camshaft position actuator. The camshaft actuator should be completely extended before installing the exhaust camshaft actuator into the Timing Chain so the marked link overlaps with the sprocket timing mark. The hex of this camshaft needs a 25 mm (1 in) wrench for proper alignment while engaging the alignment pin properly. The exhaust camshaft needs the actuator positioned on it and receives a fresh exhaust camshaft actuator bolt that reaches 25 nm (18 lb ft) torque after 135 degree angle adjustment utilizing the j-45059 (Angle Meter). And lastly remove the j-44217 tool and j-44217-45 specialized equipment and j-44221 tool from the camshafts. Place back the cmp sensor together with the camshaft cover.
