2009 GMC Canyon Cam Gear Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Cam Gear on the Camshaft Position Exhaust Actuator on 2009 GMC Canyon?
A: The first step to replace the camshaft position exhaust actuator requires removal of the camshaft cover. Check the functioning state of the cmp actuator before you take out its sensor. Turn the Crankshaft counterclockwise so the #1 piston reaches its top dead center position on compression. You should use the reference timing mark from the exhaust camshaft position actuator sprocket to identify its adjacent timing chain link. After installing the camshaft holding tool (J 44221) to the camshafts' rear you must place the timing chain retention tool (J 44217) along with the chain holding tool (J-44217-45) by hooking them into a timing chain link near the timing chain shoe by both timing chain shoes and secure the wingnuts. The hooks should stay set while gage blocks maintain firm contact against the head edge. Starting with the removal of the exhaust camshaft position actuator bolt people should proceed to extract the exhaust camshaft position actuator. After approval from the operator to install inspect the camshaft position actuator contains no obstructions. Verify the position of the actuator is set to its most forward stage. Place the exhaust camshaft actuator within the timing chain and position the marked link according to timing mark on the sprocket. Apply a 25 mm (1 in) wrench on the hex of the camshaft to achieve alignment while ensuring the alignment pin stays in place. Begin by mounting the actuator on the exhaust camshaft before securing a new exhaust camshaft actuator bolt through 25 nm (18 lb ft) torque along with additional 135 degrees as measured by the angle meter (J 45059). After removing both the timing chain retention tool (J 44217) and chain holding tool (J-44217-45) from the kit the camshaft holding tool (J 44221) needs to be taken off. Replace the cmp sensor alongside the camshaft cover as the last step.
