2009 GMC Canyon Oil Pan Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the oil pan on 2009 GMC Canyon?
A: Begin Oil Pan replacement by removing the oil level indicator and tube and engine protection shield. The procedure starts with draining engine oil and continuing with component disassembly to create sufficient clearance for the Oil Pan. The power steering gear has to be removed during rwd transmission replacement. You need to remove the front propeller shaft and differential carrier assembly bushing to frame bolts while carefully pulling the assembly down with the pinion yoke secured against rotation for 4wd work. Service slot plug removal should be accompanied by nut detachment from the fuel hose/pipe bracket and the transmission and four lower transmission mounting bolts which anchor to the Oil Pan. The power steering gear mounting bolts need removal on both 2wd and 4wd vehicles to facilitate power steering gear downward pull. Separate the engine wiring harness retainers from the Oil Pan and remove each Oil Pan bolt. Fasten two bolts into the threaded holes at the pan's rear section to create jack screws that will evenly separate the pan from the engine block and then remove the pan and screws. Apply 5.5 mm (0.22 in) sealer onto the marked Oil Pan areas before adding a second 3 mm (0.12 in) bead to the other marked space while keeping the sealer away from both the oil pump pipe and screen assembly. Position the Oil Pan on the engine block so its rear surface locks into contact with the engine block's rear surface. For situations where you need to remove the transmission use a straight edge to achieve alignment. The Oil Pan must reach the full backward position against the transmission mounting surface when the transmission remains installed. Use 25 nm (18 lb ft) for the Oil Pan side bolts but 10 nm (89 lb in) for the end bolts during installment. For both engine types, first install the engine harness retainers to the Oil Pan and then for 4wd systems position the power steering gear toward the frame assembly before mounting the bolts. Begin installation of the four lower transmission mounting bolts to a torque specification of 50 nm (37 lb ft) then continue with the fuel hose/pipe bracket nuts which require a torque of 20 nm (15 lb ft). After plugging in the service slot and mounting the relevant components you must reinstall the power steering gear for rwd or position the differential carrier assembly for 4wd before tightening the bushing to frame bolts to 152 nm (112 lb ft) and reinstalling the front propeller shaft. Install the engine protection shield before completing the procedure with the oil level indicator and tube and filling engine oil.
